Our visit to number 1, BOH Sungai Palas tea Center, was the best because off the many different stunning views of the tea fields. There are fourteen hike routes around Tanah Rata and Brinchang. There are long and short hikes, ranging from easy hikes to more difficult ones. On our first morning in the Cameron Highlands, we walked trail 10 and trail 6 combined, as trail 10 turns into trail 6.

At hike 10 you walk in an hour through a rain forest to the top of Mount Gunung Jasar. Here you have a beautiful view of the village of Tanah Rata and you can see various tea plantations. There is a large electricity pole here at the top too, which might make the accomplishment of reaching the top a little bit less special. Nevertheless, the views are worth it. After the top of Gunung Jasar, you walk a little bit back, after which you switch to trail 6.

The first part of this route is quite challenging because the path is hardly visible due to the dense vegetation and you have to descend on a muddy path. Slowly the path becomes less steep and you see more of the beautiful environment again. You walk among farms, coriander fields, vegetable and fruit plantations. Please note: due to the mud and the descents, be aware of heavy rain since the path will become very slippery and potentially dangerous. This is a very special experience and a perfect end to this hike.

Tip: hike 6 does not end in Tanah Rata. Since there is no public transport available from here, you can grab a taxi, walk 4. Finished walking and craving for something sweet? This place is the ultimate mix of Asia and England. After ordering, wait until your table number is announced, after which you can pick up your scones very Asian. In the meantime, take a look around you, there are statues of Christ everywhere, religious prints and crosses.

Very special in Islamic Malaysia. And then you can pick up your scone. This is still warm and seems to come directly from England. With a lot of butter, freshly prepared cream and strawberry jam made from local strawberries, this is a real treat! Yes, these are touristic attractions, however, I still enjoyed visiting both a strawberry farm and a butterfly farm.

Besides, you can drink delicious fresh strawberry shakes ask if they do not add sugar. This is a greenhouse where you can view butterflies, but also other insects and reptiles. All the animals you see here can also be found in the wild in the Cameron Highlands.

This is certainly a fun activity to do with children. With this hike, you walk from Tanah Rata to the village of Habu in about two hours. Along the way, you walk past Robinson Falls , a small but beautiful waterfall just outside the city. It is not an intensive hike and you mainly walk on a well-maintained trail. Every Friday and Saturday evening, there is a night market at the Golden Hills. This is located about two kilometres north of Tanah Rata, near the golf course. Here you find local dishes, strawberries, tea, honey and a whole bunch of souvenirs.

Note: if you do not want to walk along the road in the dark, you will have to take a taxi. There are no buses to and from the Night Market. Please avoid places where insects or animals are kept; as they are often in pretty bad shape for example the butterflies at the Butterfly Farm are kept in poor conditions.

At weekends you can visit the night market in the evenings. Here locals buy their ingredients, fresh meat, fish and also vegetables and fruit. Tourists can enjoy one of the popular local snacks. In the surrounding area of the Cameron Highlands there are also a large number of Orang Asli villages, which you can visit. Here you can see the original inhabitants of Malaysia in their authentic community.

The easiest way to visit the attractions is by organized tour. We found this really cheap compared to similar tours at other areas in Malaysia. For a half day tour we paid RM50 per person. The locations that you visit can be driven yourself if you have your own rental car, but they are pretty steep at certain points.

Some parts of the tour you are better off in a sturdy 4x4. Early in the morning, or when the temperature is rising fast you will witness the whole dense forest covered in white mist. Trees look magical as they are all covered in green moss. We spotted numerous pitcher plants; they are easy to spot along the short but stunning little trail. We also saw a few beautiful plants including white orchids and a couple of nice beetles, among them one huge stag beetle or at least the guide thought it was.

Mossy Forest is a must-visit when you are at Cameron Highlands. Mossy Forest is located at the slopes of Mount Brinchang, a few hundred meters from the peak of the mountain. Bring along solid walking shoes and expect them to get covered in mud. If you're still looking for your perfect hiking camera, check out this hiking camera guide by Globo Surf.

At the end of the small hike into Mossy Forest you are being treated to a fantastic view over the area, where you can make some stunning panoramic photos. Considering a trip to Mossy Forest? Make sure to wear solid sneakers or even hiking shoes and leave your flip-flops at home.

The scenic area comes right out of a tea commercial. The massive tea plantation stretches as far as the eyes can see. Everywhere you see tea bushes, all beautifully green. If you take a tour there are a couple of points where you can enjoy the scenic views best.

If you are going to visit the area by yourself rental car or by taxi then just go and stand right next to a tour group to hear the whole story of BOH tea plantation. The tea factory is open to public every day except for Mondays and public holidays. The restaurant next to the factory is opened daily; here you can enjoy a nice cup of BOH tea together with a light snack like cake, scones and tarts while you are enjoying the fantastic views from the restaurant.

The restaurant at BOH tea plantation is opened daily from 9am to 4. If you arrive around 9am it is still pretty quiet. Come around 11pm and there will be a long queue at the restaurant ordering counter. If you drive north from Brinchang you need to turn left into the small secondary road right after the Equatorial Resort and the Butterfly Farm and Butterfly Garden ; right opposite the fruit and vegetable stalls.

From there you follow the road up until you reach the fantastic scenic viewpoints over the tea valleys. Turn left at kampung Habu. Here too you will find a few great lookout points, and also a tea shop and factory. Only the one south of Tanah Rata has a scenic viewpoint. Here you can also enjoy a nice cup of fresh tea at the Cameron Valley Tea House.

There are numerous hiking trails that start from Tanah Rata village. Some require a small walk from the town to the starting point of the trail; others start right in the village itself. Not all trails are worth the while when you are only in Cameron Highlands for a few days. As with all Hindu temples, expect a riot of color here and some exquisite reliefs that tell the stories of the Hindu epics in the Tamil Nadu style. As well as having a Morning Market, the Cameron Highlands also helpfully has a Night Market which sets up as the sun goes down.

If you want to visit the Night Market you will find it in Brinchang and it sells a selection of goods like souvenirs, clothes, and local products and crafts. You will also find street food like toothsome barbecued meats so if you want to sample a range of the local delicacies cheaply then this is not to be missed.

Another one of the most famous farms in the Cameron Highlands is the Butterfly Farm which is also one of the oldest institutions in the area. If you love butterflies then you will have certainly come to the right place as there is an array of colorful species here as well as some other attractions. These include a tortoise section as well as an insect house, and all the butterflies are free flying so you will get to see them in their natural environment.

One of the best things about the butterfly farm is that you can take a guided tour of the facility and guides will explain all the different kinds of butterflies on show here and give you information on their habitats and life cycles. Located close to Brinchang on a forested hill is the gorgeous Cactus Valley, which has a fairly self-explanatory name. The valley is known for its many varieties of cacti and you can check out a plethora of colorful species as well as towering specimens and small, spiky plants.

This is a great place to see some of the more unusual flora in the Cameron Highlands and you can spend time taking pictures with the other-worldly plants, as well as admire other kinds of flora in the form of apple orchards and wild flowers. If you like golf then the Cameron Highlands is one of the most scenic spots to squeeze in a game.

Located between the main town of Tanah Rata and Brinchang, you will find a vast hole course here which has some challenging areas that will take you over rugged terrain and past scenic streams. Anyone who is a keen birdwatcher will not be disappointed at the Cameron Highlands thanks to the huge selection of species that you are likely to see here.

The rainforests that cover the highlands are known for being the perfect habitat for a plethora of avians and you can expect to see some gems such as Mountain Peacock Pheasant, Yellow Breasted Warblers, and Silver Eared Mesias. Many of the guesthouses and hotels in the Cameron Highlands will organize a bird watching tour so that you can go out with a guide who will help you to spot some of the species, or you can go it alone and hike up into the mountains solo.

It is also one of the highest points of the Cameron Highlands and you can expect to see trees here that tower to a height of up to 10 meters.

The plants thrive here thanks to the low lying mist that blankets the area and you can observe lush green vistas as far as the eye can see. To get to the forest you can walk along a handy boardwalk that stretches for two kilometers through the greenery and starts at the main road in the Cameron Highlands and takes you all the way up to the summit of Mount Brinchang.
