What makes a good recliner
They either recline using a bar located on the lower right side of the chair or by using the push-pull method described below. Power recliners have built-in motors. Unlike traditional recliners, which feature one or two recline positions and are sometimes manually controlled with a lever on the side, modern power recliners can stop at any position between fully upright and fully reclined.
Some power chairs allow you to adjust the headrest, back tilt, and footrest independently. Power recliners have dimensions similar to traditional recliners but are considerably heavier with a weight of around pounds. They are also more expensive than traditional recliners. Rocker recliner seats are generally set on a base that consists of two arch-shaped legs and a spring mechanism that allows the recliner to rock back and forth. They have similar dimensions to traditional recliners but they weigh about 60 to 80 pounds more.
Their weight capacities are generally between and pounds. Rocker recliners are popular with new parents who often use them to relax and rock infants. The body of a swivel recliner is set on a round metal base that includes a swivel mechanism allowing users to rotate the chair, often a full degrees.
This enables the user to face a person—or screen—without straining their neck or back. Swivel recliners are excellent options for rooms with multiple focal points. They have similar dimensions to traditional recliners; however, the swivel mechanism may make them heavier.
Some traditional, swivel, rocker, and power recliners include massager features. Massagers have rollers inside the body of the chair that vibrate and knead your core, replicating the sensation from a massage.
While some massage recliners focus entirely on one area of your back, others offer multiple zones that massage the upper back, lumbar area, thigh, and leg. Some models also include a heat function, which warms different parts of the seat to provide additional relief. Massagers allow you to control the massage intensity and massage type, which includes such options as wave and pulse. Massagers generally use standard power cords to power the massage functions, which you control with a remote.
Although massager recliners are similar in size to traditional recliners, the massager mechanism adds weight, making it heavier than a standard recliner at around 75 pounds. Orthopedic recliners are designed to promote good posture when you sit in them. That takes pressure off your neck, back, and legs. These ergonomic recliners come in different sizes to support your head, back, and legs, which removes pressure from the neck and spine, relieving pain.
Orthopedic chairs come in various sizes that vary in height, depth, and width. Footrest sizes fit a wide variety of body sizes and types. Orthopedic chairs use one or two motors to adjust the reclining features and footrests.
While single motors recline the back and raise the footrest simultaneously, dual motors allow for independent control of each feature. Gaming——the term used to describe playing video games——entails hours of sitting in one place while using the computer. Such a position can put extra pressure on the back and neck. Since gamers must sit up to participate, this type of recliner features thicker headrests to take stress off the neck.
These chairs are designed so the occupant sits straight up to create proper posture. Gaming recliners are generally about 25 inches wide, notably narrower than traditional recliners. Two-person recliners come in two forms. Some sit side by side, with independent reclining controls, while others function as oversize recliners with wide seats and backs that fit two people.
Oversize recliners measure about 60 by 40 by 40 inches. Their size makes them difficult to recline manually, so this recliner style typically functions as a power recliner.
They weigh substantially more——usually at least 50 percent more——than a traditional recliner. Other two-person recliners feature two seats with independent recliners and footrests separated by a large padded armrest that doubles as a console with cup holders and storage for remotes. These behemoths have similar depths and heights as traditional recliners, can be up to 80 inches wide, and can weigh more than pounds.
Those variables make all the difference when you shop for the best recliner for your lifestyle. The general purpose of recliners is to provide comfortable seating, but there are many designed with other features.
Some models offer ergonomic support, massage features, and even integrated heating pads. Others allow you to rock or sit up straight to enjoy online games.
Recliners are notorious space hogs. The average recliner, when reclined, is about 80 inches long from end to end. You will more thoroughly enjoy a recliner if it is placed in a space that allows it to fully recline.
Most recliners need at least 12 inches of clearance behind them to recline and 24 inches in front of them to allow for the footrest extension, so consider that before you make a final decision. Your small room can likely accommodate a space-saving recliner. These units, often called wall huggers, need only a few inches of clearance behind them to function properly. They often have the same dimensions as a traditional recliner. This type is set on a track that slides the seat forward when you recline, which means it needs less room behind it for you to fully recline.
Quality recliners generally have frames made of hardwood or thick plywood and use metal hardware and steel corners. This sturdy construction provides enough strength to endure the movement of the chair. Recliners are often built with molded polyester padding for the backing and batting sheets to cover hard corners.
I sleep in it total, 3 months of the year. I have never had a problem and hope it lasts for the rest of my life!! Thanks everyone. You have given me lots of things to mull over. I guess the biggest thing for me to remember is that the prime concern is comfort for DH, as he will be the one sleeping there fairly often. I guess I will just have to convince him to go shopping with me so that he can try out the chairs. We will definitely check out the different brands mentioned in your replies.
I have already been searching for retailers in our area I so wanted a recliner that looks good, but guess that is not as important as comfort and durability.
Thanks again. We have two Lazyboy recliners. One was my Dad's that my sister and I bought him for Christmas in He used it until he passed away seven years ago. We've had it ever since and my hubby sits in it daily. After I was hospitalized and took over hubby's recliner I started looking on Craigslist for a good recliner. I found a very similar, but a little more feminine looking Lazyboy that had belonged to the young man I purchased it from Grandmother. He and his wife never really used it.
We use them constantly and have no complaints. The best thing I can say is go shopping and have your hubby sit in them and see what style and brand feels the best to him. I hope you find something that helps him sleep at night. You can always check with your hubby's doctor to see if there's a possibility of having an adjustable bed prescribed for him so your insurance would pay for all or part of it.
I think lane is best. Lane is a branded company of furniture world. They provide best quality and service.
One other brand I've tried recently is Thomasville; they have a nice smooth recliner that can adjust well at any angle. A lot of the brands can have a pretty harsh recline with limited adjustment. Plus, they don't look like recliners. I also liked the power recline feature available as an upgrade I think on Bradington Young. I've always liked the massage recliners, but just can't bear to have one in the family room. We've had several Lazyboys and the quality has been good. The only problem we had with one of them was the fabric we chose was kind of an open weave and it tended to catch and pull.
Now we have leather ones and I think they will last a long time. Whenever I get a cold or allergy attack, I find it very easy to sleep sitting up or semi-reclined in the Lazyboy. DH is tall and has a tall man's Lazyboy. It matches mine exactly maroon leather , but is bigger. Most Lazyboy styles come in a tall man's version. One advantage if your hubby is tall. We just went to Lazyboy today looking for recliners and I didn't find anything I liked.
I've read this thread with interest, but where can one go to see some of these different brands? Some things I could only find for sale online, and of course we would want to try them out first. Call every furniture store near you Unfortunately, few stores carry all the styles so you're limited to trying what's on the floor. Our Lazy Boy died, and we just purchased a Smith Bros Recliner, made in Indiana, kiln dried lumber, and 8 way hand tied springs.
My husband is an Engineer, and he said the construction was great. We love it. It's a soft, wonderful stylish leather, that looks great in our Family Room. Great store! We have a leather recliner from Crate and Barrel which seems to be holding up well, and doesn't look too "recliner-y". We had an awful time with Lazyboy recliners and would not buy them again.
We bought DH a power reciner by Palliser over two years ago. DH uses it daily and he is hard on furniture but his recliner looks as good today as it did when we bought it. He sleeps in it often. Our reclining sofa and chair are by Best and they too still look great after a few years but DH rarely uses them. All of our furniture is leather, the Palliser is a thicker higher quality chosen because we knew it would get tougher use. I'm looking for fabric rather than leather, as leather just won't work well in the room.
So many of the fabric choices look really dowdy. I'd like something a bit more contemporary -- maybe tweedy -- rather than something that looks like an old bedspread.
I told the young saleswoman at Lazyboy yesterday that I thought most of the fabrics looked like the belonged in my grandmother's home, and she said, "Well, you ARE buying a recliner!
It's not the overstuffed, traditional La-Z-Boy. It's attractive, comfortable, and a great value. I strongly agree - La-Z-boy used to be a good brand, but they no longer are reliable. We initially had a great experience with La-Z-boy. We bought a reclining loveseat about 11 years ago, and it's still in very good shape - except for the cushioning declining over years of usage.
It's never had any service calls, and the mechanism is the original, which works fine. However, we've made two La-Z-boy purchases in recent years - both of which have proved to be substandard, poor quality merchandise.
The first was for two reclining chairs, and within months the cushioning had noticeably flattened with only light usage. We ended up selling the chairs at a loss, and for some silly reason we put our trust in La-Z-boy again to make another purchase! This time it was two non-reclining chairs. The experience was no better, and it would seem that despite being assured we would receive two chairs out of the warehouse, one of the chairs was a display floor model different color shade of material, different stitching.
There were other issues with the chairs, which we felt were brushed aside by the technician when he came to our home So, although La-Z-boy does service their products, it isn't a reliable service if concerns aren't addressed adequately, and resolutions aren't offered.
Needless to say, we won't risk making another La-Z-boy purchase. I disagree with allen furniture, we just recently bought a flex steel and at 18 months, the leather is falling apart and the stuffing in the cushions is not holding up and is causing more back problems than it is worth it. It cost and within 10 months it was ripping where the reclining action occurs and both sides had to be replaced and they are still ripping, the leather at the seams has lost all its color.
I have a Flex Steel recliner from the mids. Not a stain or rip in the fabric and absolutely nothing wrong with it. That's not to say today's Flex Steel recliners are the same quality unfortunately.
I just bought a Palliser recliner. I'll be ecstatic if it lasts 10 years. We bought two Lazy Boy recliners in They still look brand new, and we raised three children on these products. This is furniture we really use. We are going to buy new recliners just because we are ready for a change in You can beat Lazy Boy will get our business again. You can't beat the quality, comfort, or prices in the long run. I highly recommend Lazy Boy products. Thank you Nicole for link with leather furniture rating.
Very informative.. Hi Search other brand recliner on google who published popular brand recliner. This is one of the helpful article on top 10 recliner in , you may read here. The most recent comments are from but even those who commented way back in , when the thread started, were unhappy.
As noted earlier in this thread, we have a La-Z-Boy reclining loveseat now over 12 years old that has never needed any repairs or replacement parts. By comparison, on two separate occasions in recent years we've bought La-Z-Boy chairs first a pair of recliners, then a pair of gliders , which have proved to be sub-standard. Both types of chair required service calls within a short period after purchase. For the price of the furniture, this is simply unacceptable.
After much research, it would seem that not only La-Z-Boy, but also other formerly reliable brands are unfortunately no longer producing quality furniture. Most people who have commented on a particular brand and its durability have referred to furniture they've had for many years - a testimony of how reliable some of these brands were in the past.
Assured by four furniture stores that England was a quality furniture maker owned by La Z Boy. Leather was stretched improperly with no smoothing so there were large wrinkles to force fit the frame. There was a scuff and tear in the leather. I suppose that could be from England or the transport or the delivery. No one is accepting responsibility. My furniture store sent an England repairman out to assess the issues. He quietly contemplated it, took pictures and said he would not attempt to repair the furniture as it would take too long to fix it.
Mind you this is brand new unused furniture. My furniture store said England would not allow them to return it. On top of this, most of them said it was adequately padded and comfortable, no complaints there, and the massage points were complimented on being intelligently placed on the back, despite there only being two.
Overall, a nice and compact massage recliner; great for someone on a budget but who wants massage functionality in their recliner. It has 8 spots of vibration all over your body, with 5 different modes of vibration. It has heating for your lower back for increased comfort and relaxation. It has powered, remote-controlled reclining functionality. And the most important feature of all: it has a USB charging port. This recliner, from Oneinmil no capitalization intended, that is just how they spell it , has every possible feature you could want in a recliner.
With a soft, water-resistant, and tough fabric covering a solid metal alloy frame, this recliner promises durability to match the number and quality of the features and functionality.
On top of all these internals, we have a thick layer of padding, including padded armrests, to make your stay in this chair all the more comfortable. Features: Features powered reclining, controlled by a remote It has 8 separate modes of vibration to ensure you find the most relaxing one for you Possesses lumbar lower back hearing, right next to 2 modes of vibration to help relax your back Durable covering resists water and is made to be easy to clean Possesses a USB charging port for a phone, e-reader, or MP3 player, so you do not need to worry about cord length Pros: Well-padded all around, including the armrests Has heating elements Possesses 8 vibration elements It has a USB charging port Fully powered, continuous reclining Cons: Heating and vibration cannot be turned on at the same time Somewhat pricey, at the higher end of tier 2 recliners Customer Experience: Like the previous recliners, this one is also reviewed positively by users, though this one is also at a 4.
It should be noted; ratings are not absolute; a 4. It is an excellent way to compare it to other products of its price class, in other words. With that said, the reviews themselves speak well of the comfort and vibration, though a few people had problems with the vendor not helping them with defects or issues, with some criticizing the return policy.
Made of genuine leather, the Seatcraft Equinox is designed for finishing a home theatre with the highest quality seating. On top of the genuine leather, it has adjustable headrests, lumbar support, and reclining functionality, all powered and with a control panel for controlling it.
On top of that, the control panel has a USB port for you to charge whatever you need off of. In addition to that, it has a SoundShaker transducer, which can be hooked up to a SoundShaker amplifier sold separately to give a boost to the bass.
On top of this, in terms of comfort, the cool gel foam used as cushioning means the whole thing functions as cooling memory foam, keeping it comfortable in how it shapes itself to you and comfortable in temperature. And, if that was not enough, it has a lighted base and cup holders, with tray tables and in-arm storage for putting in snacks, beverages, or whatever you could desire in there.
Overall, the best home theatre recliner you could ask for. Very expensive Customer Experience: People agreed it was definitely a high-quality chair, and the 4. As you would expect from the price tag, customer service was very helpful, and most users loved it. The major complaint was the LED lights, which can be easily fixed, and how the table was not designed well, leading to half of a cup holder being taken up by it.
Apart from that, though, even the most negative reviews agreed it was built like a tank, which is always good to hear. It was designed with comfort in mind, with an 8-point massage system, built-in heating, rocking, and button-controlled angle control, up to degrees, for optimal comfort.
Made of faux leather, this chair brings tech into a standard, very comfortable recliner to great success. And, if that was not enough, it also has cup holders! Features: 8-point massage system with heating too, for maximum comfort Thick padding and comfortable leather for comfort in use Can rock and swivel, with excellent mobility Pros: Rocking, Swiveling, Heating, Massaging, Reclining, it has it all! Cup holders are always nice to have, especially as part of a well-designed, padded armrest.
Cons: Some people thought the swiveling base was annoying and made leaving the chair harder. No powered reclining Reviews claim it is not durable Customer Experience: Surprisingly, only a 4. There were a lot of negative reviews about the chair being flimsy and about how the customer service agents did not care, as the chair lasted beyond the mandatory point where they have to do something.
However, we found no such problems with the chair, maybe there are multiple suppliers, and one of them has poor quality? With the choice between a few styles, with differing looks and materials but the same functions, it is quite a good choice for a mid-budget recliner with the works in terms of function. Massaging, heating, and rocking for a great overall recliner It has two USB ports for charging Cons: No cup holders Customer Experience: Interestingly, the lowest we have seen yet, at 3.
Some people had trouble with locking the foot piece down, but apart from that, they were generally happy with the chair as a whole, with no real concentration of complaints. It should be noted, the majority of negative reviews were not like the Mecor, where they had serious problems. It was basically just people complaining about the leg rest and 1 other thing, of which the thing was different every time.

When choosing recliners for this list, we put in a lot of effort. After all, we owe it to you to provide the best recommendations we can, with thorough and detailed analysis to back up what we say. It is our duty to provide you with quality information, and so we did everything possible to do so. When we began our search, we looked at the best recliners, scouring forums, reviews, looking at popularity, and doing every bit of research necessary to figure out the criteria for the best.
We looked at recliners of different types, knowing that the best is, to an extent, subjective, as some enjoy heated massaging recliners and others just want a nice and simple one. We look at reviews to see what was said about the comfort and function. We looked through dozens and dozens of recliners before uncovering the best ones. The ones in this list are all exceptional, with high quality and great comfort being common amongst them all, with a focus on the best goods at the best prices. We even made sure to test them out to make sure they were everything they said on the tin and are certain in the quality of our report.
Furthermore, we chose Amazon as our preferred site for purchasing due to their return policy being incredibly protective towards consumer interests.
