Parent of a 10 and year-old Written by david. Not a Happy Movie-Tread Slowly. Precious is an obese, impoverished, illiterate, teenager pregnant for the second time with one of her father's babies. Her mother is extremely abusive, unsupportive, and unstable. So why do I think some 14 year olds can watch it?
Because it offers a window into the poorest part of society. People who don't only lack money but also knowledge, nutrition, and support. There are a few good roll models- Precious' classmates, teacher one of the first supporters in Precious' life , and the social worker who appears to care about Precious situation. The movie does not have a happy ending.
Each kid is different. For some this movie will be inspirational, for some it will be depressing- use your judgement after watching the trailer. Adult Written by lovingwifeandmom July 25, I think the "R" rating for this movie is "iffy". Adult Written by yoyolili June 5, I think that this movie has to be seen by kids that are mature enough so they can understand the content of this movie. Positive Messages. Positive role models. Parent of a 3-year-old Written by izzymommy May 13, This movie was WAY too intense for anyone under 18!
I'm 29 and it was difficult for me to watch this movie. I must say though, that it was all content-related, because I could just not stop watching it! There are some huge positives of watching this movie, as it can open a window to talking about abuse, molestation, rape, drugs, teen pregnancy and the importance of staying in school.
However, this movie is just SO graphic, intense, explicit and filled with mature subject matter that I couldn't recommend anyone under 18 to see it. I think that PARENTS would benefit the most out of watching it if only to use it as a stepping stone to talk to children about these heavy topics.

Any parent who lets their child under 17 see this movie needs to do a MAJOR self check about their own intentions. Parent of a 9 and year-old Written by psalministry1 March 30, Older kids should see with parents, in case of questions.
The movie depicts what happens in hundreds of homes today. Some may be able to identify with stereotypes and just raw dealings with abuse and trauma to the human spirit. I love it for bringing these points out, but would use caution when allowing sheltered teens see this movie.
Adult Written by baby starlite March 19, As determined as Precious is to get out, her mother, Mary, is bent on keeping her down. Played with astonishing honesty by comic-turned-actress Mo'Nique -- whose anguished performance is bested only by her bravery for tackling such an unredeemable character -- Mary is as vindictive as she is cruel.
To her, Precious isn't so much a daughter, or even a human being, as a domestic servant and a monthly bump in Mary's assistance check. There are those who try to persuade Precious to take steps to improve her life -- a teacher played by Paula Patton, a social worker played by a dowdier-than-we're-used-to-seeing Mariah Carey -- but when Precious acts on their advice, guess who throws up some of the most formidable obstacles?
Mary's violent protests are just the start, however, as a series of misfortunes conspire to derail Precious' hard-fought gains. There are moments when it all feels a little too much; as subtlety goes, Daniels' film ranks up there with a punch to the back of the head. But that's forgivable given the value of Daniels' message, summarized in a quote offered at the beginning of the film: "Everyone is a gift of the universe. And if that's not clear enough, there's the URL of the official movie Web site: www.
It is also a singular film, one that is as difficult to compare to another as it is to forget. Edit Close. Toggle navigation. Gabourey Sidibe in the title role of the drama 'Precious. No matter how much we try and get those self-help books and pray and try and find the answer.
At the worst moments of the real-life nightmares occurring within these walls, fantasy is the escape route. Precious pictures herself in glamour mode — pirouetting on stage for adoring fans or with a handsome young admirer nuzzling her neck on a red carpet — and the lighting has all the flamboyance she deserves. When Precious is out in the world, slowly finding her feet with her new friends and gaining confidence as she is treated decently by adults, there is plenty of visual boldness too.
The camera shudders a little as it captures discomfort, passing that unease on to us, or it suddenly swings from one character to another, just as our eyes would. The editing also adds to the artistry: unrelated images are cut together to create a feeling or superimposed over each other to indicate movement without us having to wait. Her voiceover both beautifully illustrates character and is a spot-on illustration of how the mind works — well, mine anyway.
Precious often laughs at herself and we love her for it. This young actress inhabits the role of Precious.
